कहानी बीस की गिनती: एक राजा की बेटी की शादी होनी थी। बेटी की ये शर्त थी कि जो भी 20 तक की गिनती सुनाएगा उसको राजकुमारी अपना पति चुनेगी ! गिनती ऐसी हो जिसमें सारा संसार समा जाये। जो नहीं सुना सकेगा, उसको 20 कोड़े खाने पड़ेंगे। ये शर्त केवल राजाओं के लिए ही है।अब एक तरफ राजकुमारी का वरण और दूसरी तरफ कोड़े ! एक-एक करके राजा महाराजा आए।
राजा ने दावत भी रखी। मिठाई और सब पकवान तैयार कराए गए। पहले सब दावत का मजा ले रहे होते हैं। फिर सभा में राजकुमारी का स्वयंवर शुरू होता है।एक से बढ़ कर एक राजा महाराजा आते हैं। सभी गिनती सुनाते हैं जो उन्होंने पढ़ी हुई थी, लेकिन कोई भी वह गिनती नहीं सुना सका जिससे राजकुमारी संतुष्ट हो सके।
अब जो भी आता कोड़े खा कर चला जाता। कुछ राजा तो आगे ही नहीं आए। उनका कहना था कि गिनती तो गिनती होती है। राजकुमारी पागल हो गई है। ये केवल हम सबको पिटवा कर मजे लूट रही है।ये सब नजारा देख कर एक हलवाई हंसने लगता है। वह कहता है, डूब मरो राजाओं, आप सबको 20 तक गिनती नहीं आती !
ये सुनकर सब राजा उसको दण्ड देने के लिए बोलते हैं। राजा उनसे पूछता है कि क्या तुम गिनती जानते हो, यदि जानते हो तो सुनाओ।हलवाई कहता है, हे राजन यदि मैंने गिनती सुनाई तो क्या राजकुमारी मुझसे शादी करेगी ? क्योंकि मैं आपके बराबर नहीं हूं और ये स्वयंवर भी केवल राजाओं के लिए है, तो गिनती सुनाने से मुझे क्या फायदा ?
पास खड़ी राजकुमारी बोलती है, ठीक है यदि तुम गिनती सुना सके तो मैं तुमसे शादी करूंगी ! और यदि नहीं सुना सके तो तुम्हें मृत्युदंड दिया जायेगा।सब देख रहे थे कि आज तो हलवाई की मौत तय है। हलवाई को गिनती बोलने के लिए कहा जाता है।राजा की आज्ञा लेकर हलवाई गिनती शुरू करता है।

A king’s daughter was to be married. The condition of the daughter was that whoever counted up to 20, the princess would choose her husband! The number should be such that the whole world is merged. Whoever cannot hear will have to receive 20 lashes. This condition is only for kings. Now the princess’s veil on one side and the whip on the other! One by one, King Maharaja came.
The king also held a feast. Sweets and all the dishes were prepared. First everyone is enjoying the feast. Then the princess’s swayamvar begins in the meeting. More than one king comes to Maharaja. Everyone recites the count that they had read, but no one could recite the count that satisfies the princess.
